Feeling Sore? Do This.

One of you asked us on our Facebook wall what do when you can’t walk after a workout because your muscles are so sore.

One of the best ways to relieve muscle soreness from working out is to work out again.

Counterintuitive, but true! A study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research had 20 women do shoulder exercises to the point of soreness. Two days later, they got a 10-minute massage on one shoulder and did 10 minutes of exercise using the other — and found that both shoulders were less sore afterwards.

How to Massage Sore Muscles:

“This is important research, because it is the first to show that massage can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines which may be involved in pain,” said Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School. She was not involved in the study. “We have known from many studies that pain can be reduced by massage based on self-report, but this is the first demonstration that the pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines can be reduced.” she said.
